The MeshCore firmware has been updated to version 1.18.0. This release introduces a wide range of improvements in stability, hardware compatibility, and usability. Key focus areas include expanded configuration options and a more robust system architecture, further optimizing the decentralized LoRa mesh network.
Enhanced WiFi and Bluetooth Functionality
Version 1.18.0 significantly extends and revamps WiFi and Bluetooth features. Specifically, WiFi Companion and BLE Companion modes have been integrated for Pico W and various Heltec boards, allowing for more flexible connectivity with mobile devices. WiFi credentials can now be configured at runtime via the CLI (Command Line Interface), simplifying setup and management. A newENABLE_WIFI_INTERFACE build flag also enables targeted activation of the WiFi interface, even if no SSID or password is set.
Improvements for Companion Mode
The Companion mode – a MeshCore variant designed for interaction with a host device like a smartphone – benefits from various optimizations. CLI responses in Companion mode are now prefixed with '>' to improve readability. Additionally, new CLI commands have been implemented to configure radio parameters such asspreadFactor or CAD (Channel Activity Detection). A significant new feature is the ability to save and load regional settings, which simplifies adaptation to local regulations.
New Hardware Support and Bug Fixes
This update expands hardware compatibility by integrating support for new boards. These include the LilyGo T-Echo Lite as a USB Companion variant, the Thinknode M8 and M4, and the Waveshare ESP32-S3-LR1121. A 1W variant has been added for the WIO Tracker L1, and the T-Beam 1W now features thermal fan control. Numerous bug fixes, including corrections for stack buffer overflows in the MACThenDecrypt function and improved GPS detection via RAK12500 and RAK12501 modules, enhance system stability. CLI command documentation has also been updated to correct outdated values and commands.Optimizations for Repeater Mode
For the Repeater mode, which forwards messages to extend the range of the mesh network, the default value forloop.detect has been set to minimal. This improves the repeater's efficiency in new installations. The old CLI command set repeat has been deprecated in favor of a simpler repeat on function.
